Utilitarianism is a secular moral principle that can be used by individuals who are either pro or con passive euthanasia, as it can be applied to the situation from many different views. Utilitarianism is simply choosing the option that will bring the most happiness to the most human beings. (Utilitarian Philosophy) Therefore, passive euthanasia will bring happiness to most when a patient is in a vegetative state and is suffering, such as seen in the Terri Schiavo case. The first way Utilitarianism can be applied to passive euthanasia is that when the patient passes away, it will relieve the pain and suffering of both the patient and family, and therefore, bring happiness to everyone as they believe that the patient is now in a better place free from the suffering they were experiencing. In comparison, the same situation could be examined in another way. Through enabling the patient to die by allowing nature to take its course will bring a lot of sadness and grief for the family and will not bring about the greatest amount of happiness for the greatest number of people. Utilitarianism is displayed in the Terri Schiavo case as Judge George W. Greer believed that allowing Terri Schiavo to pass away through the deprivation of her basic human needs, would ultimately bring more happiness than sadness to her family as they had been experiencing suffering for many years prior to her death. In some circumstances, passive euthanasia can be seen as morally humane if it will bring about happiness to the most number of human beings.
