After interviewing Bothayna Chouchane, a student at the Islamic College of Brisbane, I was able to conclude that the Islamic faith has a very strong stance against the act of passive euthanasia. “Islam is totally opposed to passive euthanasia,” she states. (Chouchane, Bothayna, 2013) The Qur’an, the Islamic sacred text says that, “To Allah belongs the kingdom of the heavens and the earth. He creates what He pleases,” (Qur’an, 42:49) providing convincing evidence that followers of the Muslim faith are forbidden to commit passive euthanasia as it is destroying what Allah created. The church is strongly opposed to euthanasia in any form and also believes that an individual does not have the right to decide when he or she will die as the Qur’an outlines, “No one can die except by Allah’s leave, that is a decree with a fixed term.” (Qur’an, 3:145) Chouchane concluded our conversation by stating, “The human body belongs to God as if like a trust which will be returned to him.” (Chouchane, Bothayna, 2013) Subsequently, upon completion of this interview, it became evident to me that under no circumstances, Muslims consider passive euthanasia to be acceptable. Due to their strong position against euthanasia in any form, I was unable to find any extra information on Muslims attitude towards this topic.
